IKEA DUKTIG PLAY KITCHEN MAKEOVER

This is another blog post that I lost when transferring old blog content to the new blog design. This play kitchen makeover was a really long but very fun project which took me almost a month to complete and pushed me creatively, tested my patience at times but gave me total satisfaction when completed! Plus it was all worth it to see the cutest smile on the birthday girl's face (Stephan's niece who turned 2 years old).

Similar Ikea hacks have become steadily more and more popular lately - taking something affordably priced but quite plain looking and doing some DIY to make it look much more expensive and luxurious. If you have a love for DIY and some time to dedicate to it - it's a no brainer! It's a great way to release some creative energy too.

So here's the before and after of my play kitchen makeover.

I'll go through my process step by step so that if you also want to try this at home it should be easy to follow along with.

STEP 1 - I bought the play kitchen here

STEP 2 - When it arrived, I used the instruction manual that came in the box to help me plan out the makeover ie. what parts were to be spray painted in what colour. I had already decided on colour scheme (grey, gold, marble) so I used the line drawing of the completed unit in the booklet provided to annotate what parts I wanted grey, gold and marble! (straight forward so far I hope).

STEP 3 - I bought the spray paint and marble contact paper. I knew I wanted the spray paint to be matt and not glossy (preferably with a chalky finish) and I knew that it would be a good idea to get a spray paint that already had primer inside for a better and smoother finish. If you decide to get spray paint without primer you should then definitely buy a separate can of primer to coat the surfaces before you use your chosen colour. Otherwise you may have to apply several coats (ie use more spray paint than necessary) to get the look you want and it won't be as nice a finish. Prep your material and it will go a long way!
I used the Pinty Plus chalk spray paint in ash grey and this gold metallic spray paint.
The marble contact paper I bought here.

STEP 4 - After your decorating materials have arrived get all the pieces of the play kitchen out of the Ikea box - but keep the outer boxing as you will find it useful to use to protect surfaces when you spray paint. The ikea duktig play kitchen is assembled in two parts - top and bottom separately. It will save you a lot of time and keep things organised if you separate the parts for top and the parts for bottom at this stage. Don't guess, check and double check that you know what each part is so that you don't paint anything in the wrong colour and throw off your makeover design.

STEP 5 - Spray paint all the parts of the play kitchen that are not remaining in their original state. I highly recommend spray painting outside and then brining the pieces in to dry (or you might get bugs crawling on there and getting stuck and they were not the easiest to remove). Better yet if you have an empty garage that would be ideal. I had some pieces that I purposefully wanted to remain white so I made sure I only spray painted the correct pieces grey. I had to apply about two coats to each piece to get a nice smooth finish. I also spray painted certain parts of the play kitchen in gold such as the sink, the taps, the hooks for the utensils to hang from and the handles of the cupboards. As well as spray painting I also covered the kitchen worktop with the marble contact paper. You have to be patient with step 5 because it is soooo tempting to want to start putting it all together, but if you take the time to make sure these parts are all finished smoothly it will make the final outcome much more rewarding - so hang in there!

STEP 6 - When you have lovingly and patiently finished your painting and everything is dry you are ready to start building! Like I mentioned earlier the guide instructs you to make the top and bottom half separately and then you join them up afterwards.

Obviously it's very important to lay out all the parts neatly before you start for peace of mind....(ocd much?...just me then?)

The cooker lights up and that made me really happy. I may or may not have played with this feature for a while.

After the top half is ready attach it to the bottom half and really see the play kitchen start to come to life!

Here's what my makeover looked like at this stage.

Pretty....but I felt like it wasn't enough. I loved how the grey, gold and marble looked together but I felt like it didn't look finished enough. I decided to add a splash back to cover the gap in the middle (made out of a large piece of foam board covered in wallpaper).

STEP 7 - Buy a large piece of foam board from any local arts and crafts store and also some wallpaper in a design/colour scheme of your choosing. You could also use wrapping paper but I wanted to use wallpaper specifically as it's thicker and more durable long term.

I made that cardboard timer (covered in some spare marble contact paper) to cover a tiny piece of wood that had splinted when a nail was hammered in - so the main message here is if you also make a small mistake don't panic. Try to think of something creative that you could do to cover the mistake/make it look nice/make it safe for the child who will be playing with it.

STEP 8 - So you thought assembling the play kitchen was fun? Now it's time to start thinking about adding decoration and tiny pots and pans and soft play vegetables to finish the kitchen off.
I wanted an extra touch of something (even after adding the splash back) so I decided to get some door knobs from Zara home (similar one's here) to screw in place just below the cooker. I loved how that turned out!

I also bought the following items from Ikea to fill the cupboards and shelves:

As you can imagine adding these items to the kitchen really made me feel like it was complete and ready to surprise the birthday girl with!

Here are some more photos of my play kitchen makeover for you to enjoy.

Hope you have been inspired!
